Breakout Sessions

Breakout sessions are offered in a variety of formats in order to best meet audience needs and learning styles. Participants will leave with actionable strategies and ideas to implement and put into practice.

Strategy Smackdown

New for 2018! Strategy Smackdown - Quick-paced sessions that are participant lead. Attendees bring visuals, manipulatives, apps, and/or models of evidence-based strategies and positive promising practices that they have implemented. Within given topic areas, participants will share details about the strategy, the features and components, how it supports individuals, why it is useful or beneficial,
and how it can be transferable and used by those in attendance.


New for 2018! MasterMind - A series of 12-15 minute concise and scripted talks using minimal slides within a single 60-75-minute session. Similar to a TED Talk, the presenter poses a question and challenges the audience to consider innovative approaches, a new perspective or way of thinking to draw a conclusion based on the presenter’s personal narrative, experiences, knowledge, and/or ideas learned along the way. OCALI will select the presentation groups of 4-5 individuals in overarching themes such as "Big Questions," "Inspiring Change," and "Empowering Ideas."

2018 Panel Banner

Panel – an interactive group of presenters who share ideas, viewpoints, and experiences on key topics and issues. Panel session are designed to cultivate increased understanding and advance knowledge on a particular subject through the sharing of different perspectives. Panel session rooms feature a relaxed setting with four chairs or stools in the front of the room. Questions and comments from the audience are welcome.

Facilitated Discussion

Facilitated Discussion – a dynamic forum to engage the audience in sharing their thoughts, ideas, strategies, and perspectives. A facilitated discussion differs from a panel session in that presenters briefly introduce a topic, then actively engage the audience in a lively and emerging exchange of viewpoints and ideas. Rooms for facilitated discussions are purposefully set with a limited number of chairs for a smaller audience to better support continued conversation and promote collective interaction.

Poster 2017

Poster – a visual display of innovative content, data, and/or findings presented by representatives from a variety of universities, programs, and agencies. Posters are set on free standing boards in the Research Symposium, and are displayed all day Wednesday and Thursday. This unique format allows attendees to see and review topics at their leisure, and provides an opportunity for presenters to engage in one-on-one discussion during an assigned one-hour lunchtime interactive presentation.

Learning Lab

Learning Lab - a hands-on, technology-based environment for discovering and practicing new skills and techniques with a variety of software and technology products. The Learning Lab is BYOT (bring your own technology) and is facilitated by content experts. An overview of tools and resources will be accompanied by active demonstrations where participants get to explore and practice what they learn as they go. 

Hands On

Hands-on Interactive – an exploration and manipulation of technology, materials, and/or resources. These sessions encourage audience participation and engagement with concepts, ideas, role playing, and implementation strategies to better understand and make practical application of session content. Rooms feature round tables to provide more surface area for manipulatives and to encourage small group interaction.

2018 Lecture Banner

Lecture – a classroom-style instructional sessions conducted by organization, school, state, and national leaders. Lecture rooms are set with both classroom style tables for taking notes as well as additional rows of chairs in the back.
